exactly. we've dev-ed up the entire pipeline and have QA-ed it as a replacement for Ogg Theora (though I'm not sure it's that much better than Ogg Theora, YMMV) to success. we're awaiting the climate and other non-technical factors before we move to it.

the negative is the last time we did a very large sampling and testing, it clocked in at 3.5x longer to transcode compared to x264 (.mp4) and the x264 time is similar to the .ogv encoding time.

This is one strange blog site. This in no reply to anyone's posting, just a reply to the horrible hook up there is here with all the spooling of the films. I refuse to watch them and sit and watch that infernal circle spool! This is 2012 and there are much more reliable and user friendly film viewing available, even on this site but that spooling BS has got to go or I go and I have been staying away because of it!

Your method of showing films sucks big time! Who wants to sit and watch the film spool for god knows how long? I sure as hell will not waste my time. Get a modern projector will you please?

i'd guess it's the same for you with the old vs. new video player.
if you don't have the bandwidth, you don't have the bandwidth (and thus things need to buffer / "spool").

since we only make one "derivative" / user accessible format size/quality, for each uploaded video, it's a fine line/tradeoff -- if we make our videos too small, we get complaints that they don't "look good", especially noticeable in fullscreen mode. other sites make 2-5 video qualities and then they can hook in frame dropping metrics to quickly determine what the best quality is for the "available bandwidth" at the time of the request for the client.

actually, another post reminded me of this.
you may be getting a small representative set of items that are non-ideally encoded .mp4 "original file" variants.

do you have an identifier you find "sucks big time"? (it's the thing after /details/[THIS THING] )

meanwhile, try this short play length item (but same encoded size) and see if it is much better than what you're seeing now, behaviour-wise:

thanks!

I am having issues with the new audio player when I try to stream soundboard recordings by the Grateful Dead. I am on a Mac and using the most updated Firefox browser and I also have the most updated version of Flash.

When I click play, the "archive" icon (the architectural design with the columns) moves from the player all the way page right; so much so that a scrolling area appears on the bottom to move there. No matter what song I choose or if I just click play, the same thing happens. As of today, I cannot play a soundboard recording from the archive site.

This problem has persisted since the new audio player was introduced. However, when I use a PC, there is no problem at all.

(With audience recordings, there is no issue.)

Any help would be really appreciated! All best.

sorry about that! indeed we had a bug for firefox and Grateful Dead soundboards. fixed as of sunday morning.

would you mind trying again and letting us know?

SORRY for that oversight and inconvenience
(it was actually something external to our new player -- our Ogg Vorbis files had something wrong with them, since fixed)

I am also having trouble streaming Grateful Dead soundboard recordings. They won't play. I am on a PC using windows 7 with Firefox, and have the Quicktime plugin installed. Audience recordings play, just soundboard recordings do not.

Other artists work as well.

It always is what it is. It works when it works. Today the player is just fine for streaming the Dead in Chicago, Feb., 1981. No problems-sounded great. Glitches and bugs are systemic. It's either the client machine, the server machine, something in between, or any combination of the three. I personally believe most problems are old, buggy, or faulty installed software on client machines. I could be wrong. but finding it only determines the source and the conditions. Thanks for a really great website.

Forum: movies Subject: Mufflled Audio. Hard to Understand. Lacks Highs

You folks did fix to sequencing. So it is nice to hear one show after the other. However the audio quality is uneven. I'm listening to Casey, Crime Photographer. And the sound quality is muffled. I have an equalizer and have upped the midrange and high frequencies. But it is still muffled. The problem is not on my end because I use the equalizer to bring make other programs more intelligible.

In contrast, 21s Precinct is excellent audio quality.

After all your hard work, it is too bad that the audio quality is so bad on Casey, Crime Photographer. Could you please fix it on your end?

Thank You!

Max Reiner
